Khunya brings the rustic flavours of Thailand's north-eastern Isan region to a quiet side street just minutes from Ikebukuro's west exits. The kitchen is staffed by chefs who hail from Isan themselves, and the team insists on importing ingredients directly from Thailand so that the holy basil, fish sauce and herbs taste exactly as they would at home. It is the sort of place where Thai regulars settle in for dinner, which tells you the spice and seasoning are the genuine article. The menu spans lunch through to late evening and reaches well beyond the usual green and red curries. Standouts include a generously herbed gapao rice, a massaman curry that is a particular lunchtime draw, a properly fiery som tam and a duck laab that keeps heat-loving diners coming back. Lunch offers a self-service soft-drink bar, whilst evening opens up a broader a la carte selection across roughly twenty seats, with card and PayPay accepted. For anyone who has been hunting for Thai food that does not pull its punches, Khunya is a heartening find in central Ikebukuro. The warm, slightly exotic dining room and staff who clearly love their regional cooking make it a comforting spot to linger. Drop in for a weekday lunch or a relaxed dinner and let the kitchen show you what Isan home cooking really tastes like.
