A top-grade rice onigiri specialist inside Echika Ikebukuro, serving hand-pressed rice balls from early morning.
Bontabonta is an onigiri specialist that takes its rice seriously, using only first-grade grains to craft each hand-pressed rice ball. Its Echika Ikebukuro branch, located in the underground shopping concourse beneath Ikebukuro Station, is a popular stop for commuters and travellers looking for a proper Japanese breakfast or a satisfying snack on the go.The menu offers a wide variety of fillings, from classic salmon and kombu to more inventive seasonal combinations. The rice is cooked to a pleasing texture that holds together without being heavy, and each onigiri is made fresh throughout the day. Bento boxes are also available for those wanting a more substantial meal.
Opening from 7:30 in the morning, Bontabonta is one of the earliest food options in the station complex, and it stays open until 21:00 every day of the year. It is a no-fuss, reliably delicious choice that showcases the beauty of simple, well-made Japanese food.

I picked up Nozawana chirimen (pickled mustard greens with dried sardines) and spicy mentaiko. The Nozawana chirimen was nicely seasoned and full of flavor, while the spicy mentaiko was also delicious.

The onigiri (rice balls) were tasty, and they were served with a glass of water—a nice touch. You can also purchase just the rice balls and enjoy them right there in the shop.

I stopped by on a weekend afternoon. 🍙 I selected some onigiri from the display and also ordered miso soup to enjoy at the table.

This rice ball shop is about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station. It's not Bongo but Bonta, and if you Google it, you'll find out it's a branch of that shop.
